As a twenty-year-old, while watching Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, I suddenly understood what I wanted to do. I abandoned my computer science degree at Cape Town University and left for Europe in pursuit of it. Many lean years followed before a film competition enabled me to make a short film. From 1982 onwards, every day was spent inching my way into the British film industry. By the time I made my first commissioned documentary in 1984, it was clear that the independent filmmaker’s path would be mine. All the works I’ve been fortunate to make have been produced independently.
